The Reading Challenge 2

A photocopy of from the original book.

Today is our 29th day of Tricia's reading Lesson. Everyday she's excited to learn a new sound/letter and can't wait to read the story at the end of the lesson.

Just this morning, she read a 'story' from the book,

A few days ago, she would sound out the words so slow and read like this aaaaannnnn aaaannnnnnt caaaannnn .. but now, she can read quite fast.

I really commend the book ( unfortunately, not myself..heheh! as much as I would like to..;) ) because even if it's only a 20 minute lesson each day, but every skill is being built each day.

For those who are interested, this is how a typical lesson would look like.

First will be the sounding of the letters. New sounds are being introduced every other day.

Second is the sounding or reading of words, the slow way ( sounding each letter) first then reading it the fast way.

Third would be a kind of review of the letters but this time they must sound it out the fast way.

Fourth would be the sounding out the words in the story two times. First will be the slow way, then the fast way. To practice comprehenshion of the story, questions are being asked (in relation to the story) after reading the sentences. And with this, the picture must not be shown. Because if the picture is shown, then the child won't be forced to remember the sentence but there is always the tendency to guess (just like what Tricia likes to do when she's tired).

Fifth would be reading a phrase from the story the fast way.

Then last will be finding of some key words. This allows them to develop the skill of reading fast.

All that for a 20 minute lesson. Quite impressive eh?

Above is a snapshot of what she's going to read on day 78. It's looks like an overwhelming task for a 4 year old. But I think it can be done. :)

I used this book with my two youngest. They are now 15. I loved it. It really seemed to work for us.
