A Summary of the Hat Yai Flood

As some of you may have already known ( from my other blog), our city has been flooded early this week. We have been affected but praise God that we are all okay. We thank God for friends and family who prayed for us and for the entire city as well. Hundreds of thousands of people have been badly affected by the flood with 12 casualties . :(

But I do commend the Thai government for acting fast in rescuing the people and meeting their needs. Though there are some places who didn't get immediate help due to impassable roads and routes, but they were really all out in their effort. We thank God too that the water subsided fast ( in less than 24 hours) in most places. The government said this is due to the bigger and more efficient drainage system that they build 10 years ago right after the Hay Yai 2000 flood. It has been reported that this flood is far worse than the 2000 flood with more amount of rainfall, the flood reaching 80% of the whole city and the level of water a bit higher. It took a week for the 2000 flood to completely dry out whereas it only took 3 days this year. With this, the government is looking for more ways to improve the drainage system and rerouting the flood waters. They said, that flooding can not be avoided in this part of the country as the city is in a low lying area like that of a 'wok'.

It has been estimated that the city lost 10 Billion baht due to the recent flood. Businesses have been badly affected and I'm sure many of them could have thought of buying gold coins as one of the ways of investing their money as it would mean stability in the future.
