We just finished my li'l girl's read-aloud for today, the book entitled Twenty and Ten by Claire Huchet Bishop. It was a very interesting book that we even finished reading the pocketbook in one sitting. This book is based on a true story set during the World War II when the Nazis where occupying France . It's main theme is courage as 20 French school children hid 10 Jewish children. The Germans came, interrogated and harassed the children but they succeeded in keeping the Jewish children as a secret.
As I read the book aloud to my daughter, I could see the excitement in her eyes as the suspense came and the joy in learning that the kids have triumphed. I on the other hand, enjoyed the read aloud as well.
There was one part in the story where the children had a small chocolate bar. Due to the war, didn't get to have this treat for several months, so they treated the chocolate as gold. They only took a taste of it, savored it and even hid it under a rock to be kept for a long time. They kept the chocolate's hiding place as a secret and called it 'gold' so that other kids will not get to know about it. Wow, that gave us a picture that even if life was comfortable for the kids during that time but they were deprived of the simple pleasures in life. But since the story ended happily with the end of World War II, I'm sure they would have enjoyed their freedom and once again experienced these simple pleasures like buy gold or rather chocolates.
